There’s quite a bit of folklore associated with black cats, and it’s not necessarily working in their favor. Historically, some cultures have deemed these beautiful creatures bearers of bad luck. Sadly, the stigma surrounding black cats has proven to negatively impact their chances of finding a forever home. According to Time magazine, dark felines have the lowest adoption rate and are more likely to be euthanized because of that. Heartbroken by these facts, Los Angeles photographer Casey Elise is attempting to help these adorable animals shake their bad reputation.Elise began volunteering at the West L.A. Animal Shelter earlier this year, shooting photos for the organization’s website. With cats Eloise and Nancy as her models, Elise took a series of beautiful photos that captured their wonderful personalities. Although Elise doesn’t own a black cat of her own, she is a cat mom to gray and white Imogen, who she adopted from the shelter last December. Finding Imogen is what inspired her to volunteer her time at the shelter.
